Paths to Divinity Joseph DiCristofano 9780557295166 Books Reviews
These stories are dark. There are points of defined horror scripted artfully and with great detail, and chilling to the core. I like how Joseph writes. His style reminds me of Edgar Allen Poe. This book emulates what makes dark short stories so freaking great for me. While I was reading story number two for the second time, I found myself physically shaking, again. The horrific details put me right there in that nightmare. It actually scared me. As jaded as I probably have become in this world that we live in, it is wonderful to be jolted that way.
Paths to Divinity is not a helter-skelter collection of short stories (rather popular these days), but rather a reviving of a hibernating medium. Some stories require such diverse voice and point of view as to strain against the classic story arc of the novel. Yet they are still stories deserving to be told and which we yearn to hear.
Thus enters Paths to Divinity, a story of nothing less than the veil between worlds. With each of the shorts in this collection Dicristofano toys with a different human perception of ultimate reality. With startling vividness Dicristofano delves into one world view after another, leading the reader down disturbingly provocative and terrifying bunny trails only to yank her from the threshold at the moment of transition and toss her back into the darkness yet again.
Fresh and cunning, Paths to Divinity leaves nary a stone unturned. A few of my favorites involved a tennis playing Grim Reaper, an evolving relationship between the Angel Uriel and the original serpent, and a terrifying twist of the demonic.
Amidst a sea of vampires and perky, pre-teen-on-angel romance, Paths to Divinity offers a hardy meal of venison and mead for the mind. Each course of the feast provides a new complexity of flavor begging the reader to either thrill or shiver under the implications. What does this life hold? What of the next? What of the in-between? And how will I respond when the moment finds me?
Horrible and beautiful at the same time, Paths to Divinity's means and methods matches its contents perfectly. My only contention with the work is that more than once it kept me up at night.

Joseph DiCristofano's debut, PATHS TO DIVINITY is a solid and engaging collection of short stories. For the bulk of my experience with PATHS TO DIVINITY, I found myself wanting to read further and further. Fans of Neil Gaiman's fiction (particularly his Smoke and Mirrors Short Fictions and Illusions (P.S.),) will find a lot to enjoy here. Many of Gaiman's themes are present here the focus on mythology, the world's dissipation of faith and beliefs, childlike wonder and whimsy, and a slight sense of humor all underscored by dark moods. Most of these stories are short enough to read in one sitting and they are compelling enough to keep you until you're finished.
The collection opens with the spooky "Hydromancy 101." H.P. Lovecraft is appropriately alluded to in the opening epitaph; the story feels very much inspired from Lovecraft's body of work. Unspeakable horrors, scholarly characters, ancient forces awoken by mortals all of these themes are present. This story showcases the author's talent for writing action-oriented scenes. "Hydromancy 101" really picks up when the narrative focuses less its the point of view and more on the situation at hand (the seance is particularly engaging). The second story, "Feels Like Home" is a short piece focusing around a twisted serial-killer. DiCristofano gives the reader some pretty memorable imagery and descriptions. The third piece, "The Passing of Eric Webber" does a great job of showing the author's range. It is simultaneously funny, sweet, and sad.
The final two entries, "Thy Kingdom Found" and "The Genesis of Incarnates," create a nice one-two punch for a finale. The former is a whimsical tale of a little girl who stumbles across the garden of Eden. Unfortunately, I felt like the ending of "Thy Kingdom Found" became a tad preachy, but for the most part, the story works really well. Again, there are nice images, nice descriptions, and good depictions of how a child would react given the circumstances. The final "The Genesis of Incarnates" feels like the author free associating while eating a bowl of cereal. As silly as it sounds, it was a surprisingly effective way to close the book someone struggling to make an impact on the world.
While PATHS TO DIVINITY proves to be a great read, there are a few issues that I had with the collection. It feels as if the author hasn't quite mastered his pacing yet. The last half of "Thy Kingdom Found," and some of "Hydromancy 101" suffer from this; the narrative moves too quickly between personal and intimate conversations to months (or years)-spanning shifts. Additionally, there were a few moments where it felt like the characters were using inappropriate dialogue (i.e., King Leonidus using the phrase "lap-dog.") For a story that tries to root itself heavily in history, moments like this really pull the reader out of the narrative. The point of view in "Hydromancy 101" was a problem for me; while I love the story (especially the ending), I feel as if it would have worked better from a third-person point of view.
All in all, this collection is worth your time and money. PATHS TO DIVINITY is a solid debut and makes DiCristofano an author to watch in coming years. Fans of Neil Gaiman, C.S. Lewis, and H.P. Lovecraft will like many elements of this work.
This book of short stories kept me interested and wanting more. With so much detail, these dark tales put me into a different world with the characters. I look forward to reading more from this author.
I found this book hauntingly delightful. The authors writing put a death grip on me and never let go!
My favorite story is Hydromancy 101 but all the other stories are equally amazing.
